Parts of a molecule that seen in isolation are identical may play different roles in the constitutional formula already. Such parts are called constitutionally different or constitutopic groups. An example are the three methyl groups in 2-methylbutane. The two methyl groups C1 and C5 are constitutionally equivalent, and constitutionally different from C4.
